Between June 26 and 28, the Climate Action Institute took part in the CoopClima ForumForum, an event organized by the Municipality of São Vicente. The event is part of the project "Co-Planning for Climate Justice in the Municipality of São Vicente", a joint initiative between the Municipality of São Vicente, the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (EACH-USP) and the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP).
The program included presentations and debates involving researchers, academics, municipal and state authorities, with the aim of developing public policies for climate action, promoting co-creation with the local community and integrating scientific evidence to support decision-making. According to Mário Bueno, São Vicente's Deputy Secretary for the Environment, "the forum aims to open up a dialog of ideas between civil society, universities and multi-level public bodies to debate the actions taken in relation to climate change".
The Institute's Executive Director, Gabriel Mantelli, was part of the Opening Session on climate cooperation, which discussed the global negotiations at the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) and the progress of climate litigation. "Aligning global expectations and opportunities with the needs and demands of the territories is a fundamental key to fulfilling the Paris Agreement," he said.
Other panel discussions focused on "Inter-federative Dialogues for Climate Justice: Municipalities, the State and the Union" and "Leadership in focus: dialogues with Municipal Councils". The event also included a practical part with the "Climate Justice Workshop".
Participation in the Opening Table and in debates on climate cooperation and litigation allowed the Institute to share knowledge and experiences, contributing to the discussion on advances in the area and promoting evidence-based solutions. The event provided a platform for the Institute to reinforce its mission and visibility, highlighting the work done in favor of climate justice and demonstrating its active role in initiatives relevant to climate change mitigation. The Forum also allowed for a better understanding of local and regional dynamics, which is crucial for adapting and improving climate action strategies in different contexts.
The Climate Action Institute emphasizes its commitment to the pursuit of climate justice and argues that local municipal actions are of fundamental importance in tackling climate change.
